Techno-pop unit Perfume first documentary following their international debut WE ARE Perfume -WORLD TOUR 3rd DOCUMENT screened in the Panorama section of the 28th Tokyo International Film Festival on October 24, and Ayaka Nishiwaki (“a-chan”), Yuka Kashino (“KASHIYUKA”), Ayano Omoto (“NOCCHi”), and director Taketoshi Sado attended the screening at TOHO CINEMAS Roppongi Hills in Tokyo for a “greetings from the stage”.
It has been 15 years since Perfume was first formed, and this documentary follows the group on their world tour “Perfume WORLD TOUR 3rd” held 2014 – 15 in time with the 10th anniversary of their media debut. The camera follows them for a period of about 2 months, showing what the members of the band commonly known as “damedashi-kai” (“the fault finders”) are like, what they do during their minimal time off, and includes one-on-one interviews.
Perfume walked the red carpet during the opening ceremony of the film festival, held on the 22nd. a-chan reflected that “I was not sure if we really should have been walking on the red carpet, not being actresses or anything. I mean, It was OK to be just walking, right? Without dancing or doing anything special? I got really nervous just walking there, maybe this was the most nervous I’ve ever been”. Even so, “when the camera is on me, before I know it I’ve listed off what’s so great about the film, and I surprised myself”, saying that she thinks of the film as a gift for the past 15 years.
KASHIYUKA was nervous as well, but likewise said that “on the red carpet, we secretly talked to decide where to stop walking and when to turn our face toward. It’s really like us to have fun even though we are nervous.” NOCCHi said that she felt deeply that she “was very happy that their manager Mossan (Shiro Yamamoto) was able to walk with them as their producer”. Director Sado, who was at the photo session together with all three of the members, said “I’m really sorry I can’t pose properly (laughs).” He also expressed his gratitude- “I’m just really glad that the girls are happy to let me walk with them.”
When asked what their next goal was now that they had done an unsupported show in the USA, a-chan said “we’ve just experienced so many things that we never thought were possible this year. So many people have celebrated this fact for us, so we would like to continue to have a good time with everyone, continuing to work while also enjoying ourselves.” Her sincere motivation was clear. NOCCHi also added that “being a part of Perfume gets more and more fun every year. During the documentary I talked about some fairly big dreams, and I want to be able to achieve those with the other group members, who are able to make the journey fun.” Kashiyuka showed a renewed determination, saying that “the reason that I was able to get this far, was that I was able to be with the other 2 members. I think it would be great if we could continue as the 3 members of Perfume forever. At the same time, I hope that the staff, the fans, and all the people who have taken the trouble to get to know us are happy.”
WE ARE Perfume -WORLD TOUR 3rd DOCUMENT will be released from October 31 onwards at TOHO CINEMAS Shinjuku, Tokyo and other theaters nationwide.
