Introduction

Kidlat Tahimik of Perfumed Nightmare (1977) and Turumba (1983) is well-known in Japan as a cross-genre artist who participated in the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale. BalikBayan #1 is his long-awaited feature. The year 2021 will be the 500th anniversary of Ferdinand Magellan’s first-ever circumnavigation of the globe, but this docudrama insists that Malacca-born slave Enrique is the one who actually made it. This is a grand attempt to reinterpret world history from an Asian point of view. Filming has continued for over 35 years, and the story is still evolving. We see actors including Tahimik himself in different roles, young then and aged now, but existence of karma is implied between those roles. This uniquely different storytelling is a fine example why Tahimik stands out from the rest.
