Introduction

Pastoral Hide and Seek is an original feature film based on a collection of poetry anthology of the same name. The film is set in the Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori prefecture, and features various motifs that typify Terayama’s surreal world, including matricide, runaways, Mt. Osorezan, a circus, and a goat. The film explores memory, a lifelong theme for Terayama. Terayama described the film as follows: “This is a fiction in a form of the biography of a young man. If we wish to break a spell of history, we must, first of all, liberate ourselves from our individual memories” (Director’s note by Terayama). The film selected in the competition section of the 28th Cannes Film Festival in 1975.
