A young man is haunted by the lyrics of a “temari ball” song sung to him by his mother when he was a small child. Following his mother’s death, the young man goes on a journey in search of the lyrics to the song. In this avant-garde work, Terayama creates a surreal world that interweaves between dream and reality. Terayama sought to convey how the young protagonist, in the course of his journey to uncover the lyrics, gradually picks apart the illusion of identity. Labyrinth in the Field was screened in around 30 cinemas in Paris as part of Pierre Braunberger omnibus Private Collections, and following Terayama’s death in 1983, it was screened at the commemorative event in Japan.
