Introduction

Throw Away Your Books, Let’s G0 into the Streets is the film adaptation of a documentary-cum-musical play of the same name that the Tenjo Sajiki theater troupe, headed by Terayama, staged in various places throughout Japan. It is an experimental film that combines elements of fiction and documentary. For example, one of the settings is a ramshackle apartment in which the four actors actually resided. There is a rock score based on poetry submitted by a late teen, and the camera soars in the sky and rolls on the ground. This is Terayama’s first full-length film. Terayama claimed that he wanted to create a rock musical film that never follows movie conventions. The film won the Grand Prize at the San Remo Film Festival.

Director: Shuji Terayama
Born in 1935 in Aomori Prefecture. Terayama wrote haiku poems from an early age, and was an active tanka poet during his days as a student at Waseda University. After dropping out of university, Terayama worked as a playwright, radio dramatist, and screenwriter. In 1967, he founded the Tenjo Sajiki theater troupe. In 1971, Terayama wrote and directed his first full-length film, Throw Away Your Books, Let’s Go into the Streets. In 1983, Terayama died suddenly at the young age of 47.
