Introduction

Young German soldiers are sent to remove land mines along the Danish coast after WWII. Though once aligned with the Nazis, some of them have no experience of war, causing the commander’s attitude to waver in this affecting and highly suspenseful drama.

This fictional work is based on historical fact. After World War II ended, some 900 people were killed trying to dispose of the mines buried along the Danish coast. Martin Zandvliet’s films often focus on unusual characters, including an actress who attempts to beat alcoholism and make a comeback (“Applause”), and a lonely bodybuilder who travels to Thailand looking for a wife (“Teddy Bear”/screenplay). This script, which took three years to complete, depicts a commander struggling with his conscience, and a group of young German soldiers coming to grips with their crimes. The beautiful coastline creates a contrast with the fear of death, imbuing the film with a vivid sense of reality.
